If you ever go on the Internet, chances are you have some sort of spyware looking at your computer and transmitting your data from your computer to other computers.  Most of the time, this spyware is harmless and won’t do any damage, but in some cases, you may be leaking your personal information all over the Internet.  Here are 3 easy steps to eliminating spyware and keeping your data safe from prying eyes. 

The first step is to learn what spyware is bad.  Spyware is bad when it gets onto your computer without your knowledge and slowly starts to take over your computer.  Sometimes it will redirect you to different websites while you are surfing the net, transmit your personal data or browsing history to their website, instruct your computer to download viruses and so on.  Spyware can also cause your computer to slow down because it runs in the background, which can eventually cause your computer to crash.  Basically, any spyware that gets loaded onto your computer without your knowledge is going to be bad.  Being aware that your computer has spyware on it is the first step to getting rid of it.

The second step to eliminating spyware is to get an anti-spyware program and use it.  If you have an anti virus program on your computer, check to see if it is also going to find spyware as well.  If it does, you are covered, but if it doesn’t, you may need a separate program.  There are tons of anti-spyware programs out there, most of which are going to work well if you use them.  Using the program is important, and updating the program is just as important.  Keeping your anti-spyware program updated is going to be important, because there are always new spyware threats that are being discovered.  If you are forgetful about running the anti-spyware program, you may want to find a program that will update itself and run itself on a daily or weekly basis.  That way, you get the protection that you need without having to remember to do it. 

The final step to eliminating spyware is to change your surfing habits.  Thinking about the sites that you visit is one step to cutting back on the number of spyware threats on your computer and thinking about the files that you download is another.  If that isn’t enough, you may want to change your computer settings to not allow files to be downloaded on your computer without your knowledge.  This will slow down your surfing speed because you will have to confirm each of your downloads, but it will keep your computer safer. 

Getting rid of spyware is important, because it can really cause damage to your computer.    Spyware is one of the downsides of using the Internet, and if you are surfing the web without the protection of an anti-spyware program, you are risking your data and privacy.  However, it is pretty easy to keep your computer safe, and doing so is as easy as following these three steps.  Once you get the problem under control, maintenance is pretty easy and you will feel a lot better knowing that your computer is safe.
